Eleanor Holliday (Elle) … about:
For my whole life I have taken inspiration from the sound of the human voice. I sang in church choir, school choir and in plays. Spoken word and theatre provided a rich sonic diet and livelihood for many years but choir-leading is now both my passion and my career. I gather singers together to weave harmonies and dissonances that move the soul and vibrate the cells of our bodies.

The Choirs
I run five choirs a week, every week: Acapellies Choir, Acapeeps Choir, Springhill Singers, Gold Choir (now at the museum as Seasons Singers), and Harmony Singing which is also based at the Museum in the Park. The two daytime gatherings could described as well-being singing groups. The three evening choirs offer more challenging polyphony.

Performances
Acapellies Community Choir began to evolve in 2015. I wanted to grow a local, un-auditioned choir that would perform publicly and creatively. We first gathered together in the Star Anise Cafe in Stroud. From there the choir blossomed but then the lockdowns came into force and in 2020 we were no longer allowed to sing any more. We met online for a while, to keep group morale up and then sang outside in the cafe courtyard. Since this time we have moved to a larger premises and performed many concert-series in the round. The Gratitude Project, Songs of Fortitude, Sanctuary, Archaea, InConsolable, Resonance and WildSong.

Song Forager
For me ‘song-foraging’ includes buying old choral music from secondhand shops, asking trees or rivers for inspiration, trying the acoustic of ancient churches, poetry, my piano, the voices of my singers, travelling in other countries, being taught by interesting practitioners, remembering songs I heard as a young person, hearing choirs or world musicians online. I have lots of notebooks around where I’ve recalled words or harmonies I hear and the recording app on my phone. So I’m constantly gathering. I carry a basket of sounds and ideas around with me much of the time.
